Choirs

Codetta

The international prize-winning choir Codetta was formed in 2001. Since then, they have earned a reputation for choral excellence and have given many concerts both nationally and internationally, including performances in the United States, Italy, Spain, the Czech Republic, Norway, Slovenia and Switzerland.

Past highlights include two Prom performances in the Royal Albert Hall in London, Last Night of the Proms in Belfast and special guest choir for the 2015 BBC Sports Personality of the Year, which was broadcast live to an audience in excess of 8 million viewers. In May 2016, Codetta performed with Barry Douglas and Camerata in the Kennedy Centre in Washington.

The choir performs regularly with the Ulster Orchestra, most recently in recording the soundtrack to the film ‘Lost Lives’ and as part of the City of Derry International Choir Festival in performances of Brian Irvine’s Anticlockwise, Howard Jenkins’ The Armed Man and Anton Bruckner’s Mass No.2 in E Minor in 2019.

With a return to live music making for the festival in 2021, Codetta joined with members of local choir, Momentum, for a performance of Bob Chilcott’s The Voyage and also presented a memorable late-night concert with cellist, Kim Vaughan in St Columba’s Church, Long Tower.

Future plans for 2022 include the About Us project in March, Opera Hibernia in July, City of Derry International Choir Festival in October and the annual Messiah and Codetta Sings Christmas concerts in December.

Codetta Junior

Both Codetta Junior and Codetta Youth Choirs were launched in September 2017, in order to provide a choral pathway for singers from age 7 to adult within the Codetta family of choirs.

The members are drawn from schools throughout the Derry City and Strabane District Council area and meet for weekly rehearsals throughout term time. The choirs had their origins in what were previously the City of Derry Civic Choirs.

The Codetta Junior Choir comprises young singers aged 7-11. They meet for a weekly rehearsal, 5.00-6.00 pm each Tuesday evening in the Model PS. The choir follows a programme of Kodaly-based learning and explores a wide range of varied and exciting repertoire. The choir members have regular performance opportunities throughout the year, with one of the highlights being the annual Codetta Sings Christmas concert in December, when they join with the other two Codetta choirs.

Codetta Youth

Both Codetta Junior and Codetta Youth Choirs were launched in September 2017, in order to provide a choral pathway for singers from age 7 to adult within the Codetta family of choirs.

The members are drawn from schools throughout the Derry City and Strabane District Council area and meet for weekly rehearsals throughout term time. The choirs had their origins in what were previously the City of Derry Civic Choirs.

The singers in the Codetta Youth Choir are drawn from post primary schools throughout the Derry city and district area, as well as pupils from schools in Donegal. The choir rehearses weekly during term time at 6.15-7.30 pm in the Model PS and performs regularly at concerts, functions and festivals throughout the year.

Codetta Youth Choir has enjoyed extraordinary success since its formation in September 2017, including prize-winning performances at international festivals in Derry, Cork and Cardiff. In recent years they’ve performed with members of Tenebrae, Chanticleer, VOCES8 and The Marian Consort. They also work and perform regularly with singers of a similar age in the ground-breaking choral project involving the North Belfast Youth Choir.
